Six Ways to Revitalize Your Health This Spring

According to Ayurveda, your mind and body thrive when you tune into the rhythm of nature and balance the elements. As the season’s shift, so too do we need to shift our practices, diets and routines to nourish ourselves and balance & restore our health in harmony with nature.

Spring is a time for renewal and rebirth. It is said that energy moves upward and outward through the physical body with the change in season, bringing with it accumulated kapha - the chief energy and dosha of winter. As this energy rises and moves through the lungs to be released, some may experience colds, allergies and respiratory conditions.

As you’ve already begun to notice this week, the days have gotten longer and warmer. Because I’m a Holistic Health Coach, I’m often asked how to make the change in season’s easier. Supporting your body with seasonal herbs, foods, exercise and rituals that meet your own unique lifestyle needs and align with nature is key for bolstering your well-being and cultivating balance and ease in this transition.

Here are Six Recommendations to Balance and Restore Your Health and Well-being as we transition into Spring:

  • Make space. Clear out all of the thoughts, beliefs, and limiting narratives that no longer serve you so that you can approach your goals from a newly inspired and open space.

Take Spring cleaning to heart by getting rid of the belongings you haven’t used or that carry energy you no longer want to hold on to. For instance, toss any clothing you haven’t worn in the last year. You can give them away or resell them, and then replace them with one or two new items that fit well and make you feel great.

Clear out your kitchen cabinets, refrigerator and freezer, and make room for seasonal, nutrient-dense whole foods that nourish and energize you.

Lastly, cleanse and balance your energy with methods like Reiki (scheduling linked here) which break up the stale, stagnant energy and blockages that no longer serve you so you can revitalize the natural flow of life-force energy within and around the body.

  • Set an intention to try something new this Spring. What new practices or habits you can employ to support your goals?

Since Spring is a time for renewal and rebirth, identify a new intention for the season. How can you incorporate new practices or habits? How do you want to feel?

Because Spring is a lighter and brighter season, think about ways you can you add more play, ease and adventure into your life!

  • Tune in to nature. The days are longer and there’s more sunlight, which means you can stretch your legs outside, get closer to nature again and soak up some much needed Vitamin D. These are all things that can do a mind and body so much good.

  • Use seasonal herbs and spices to support your body with the transition. Warming spices leading into Spring can stimulate circulation and energy flow and are deeply grounding. Try incorporating things like ginger, black pepper, fennel, and pippali into your meals.

  • Eat more seasonally grown, light, bright and easy-to-digest foods. - Include more pungent, bitter, and astringent foods in your diet such as dark leafy greens, leeks, asparagus, artichokes and radishes. And minimize heavy or watery vegetables like potatoes and squash.

Also consider eating less heavy, oily foods and instead incorporate light and cleansing fruits like apricots, plums, and peaches.

  • Make the most of the early morning sunlight. Wake with the sunlight, opting for an earlier start to the day, and add some gentle exercise first thing in the morning. Sweating it out builds your inner warmth, detoxifies and supports elimination and healthy digestion.
